The following is a list of the Libraries' locally-developed digital collections, many of which involve a partnership with other institutions or organizations throughout the state of Connecticut and/or within New England.

   

 

Benthic Marine Algal Herbarium of Long Island Sound
Project Managers: Shelley Cudiner and Nancy Gillies, University of Connecticut Libraries (Stamford)
Project Summary: This database is being created to produce an identification database of collected and pressed specimens of algae from the Long Island Sound for teaching purposes while at the same time creating an image archive for UConn’s algal herbarium. The image ar
chive and compendium document all benthic marine macro algae species in the Long Island Sound.

Charles Olson's Melville Project
Project Manager: Melissa Watterworth, Curator of Literary and Natural History Collections, Archives & Special Collections, Thomas J. Dodd Research Center, University of Connecticut Libraries
Project Summary: In December 2001, the University of Connecticut's Archives & Special Collections at the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center was awarded $40,000 by the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation to clean and make accessible a series of hand-written cards produced by the poet Charles Olson. The cards represent Olson's efforts to transcribe the marginalia in hundreds of books owned by Herman Melville.

Colonial Connecticut Records (CCR)

Project Summary: This digital collection is a searchable database of scanned images which reproduce the Public Records of the Colony of Connecticut, 1636-1776, Volumes 1-15. A new phase of the project is currently in development which will provide full-text search capabilities throughout the 15 volumes.

Connecticut Bibliography

University of Connecticut Libraries
Project Summary: The Connecticut Bibliography contains approximately 10,000 citations to books and journal articles that discuss Connecticut history and identity. These citations reference material published from the early 18th century until the early 1980s and are derived from Connecticut: A Bibliography of Its History (Hanover: University Press of New England, 1986), volume 6 of the Bibliographies of New England History compiled by the Committee for a New England Bibliography.

Connecticut History Online (CHO)
Project Managers: Thomas Wilsted is the CHO Project Director. This project, funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), is a collaborative effort by the Connecticut Historical Society, Connecticut State Library, Mystic Seaport, New Haven Colony Historical Society, and the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center at the University of Connecticut Libraries. Phase I of the project is now complete. Phase II of the project began in January 2003 and, when finished in late 2005, will include many new materials and formats including broadsides and maps. Many staff members throughout the University of Connecticut Libraries have contributed to CHO.
Project Summary: CHO is an ongoing digital library project which currently consists of 19th and 20th century photographs, drawings and prints from three institutions depicting social, business, political, educational, cultural and civic life with curriculum materials for grades 7-12. The website contains over 14,000 images. Geographical sites may be searched using a Digital Geographic Locator developed by the University of Connecticut's Map and Geographic Information Center (MAGIC).

Connecticut Institute of Water Resources: Special Reports
Project Manager: Jonathan Nabe, Reference Librarian/Liaison to the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources,
University of Connecticut Libraries
Project Summary: This is one of the library's newest digital collections which makes available the Special Reports of the Connecticut Institute of Water Resources (IWR). A total of 38 reports published between 1966 to 2002 are now available online.

Digital Collections Online (DCO)
Project Managers: Heidi N. Abbey, Digital Collections Librarian, and Kathy Labadorf, Undergraduate Services/Reference Librarian at the University of Connecticut Libraries
Project Summary: This resource includes information about and links to digital collections worldwide, which range in subject from classic American sheet music and Connecticut history to George Washington's papers at the Library of Congress and Victorian literature. The database currently contains over 200 collections and will be updated on a continual basis.

Invasive Plant Atlas of New England (IPANE)
Project Managers: In its pilot phase, the project manager from the Libraries was Carolyn Mills, Reference Liaison Librarian, Life Sciences, University of Connecticut Libraries. The project is now supported by a grant from the USDA. Partners involved in the project include: the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department of the University of Connecticut, the University of Connecticut Libraries, the University of Connecticut Center for Geographic Information and Analysis, the Silvio O. Conte Refuge of the U.S. Fish & Wild Life Service, and the New England Wildflower Society.
Project Summary: IPANE is a multi-faceted project designed to provide comprehensive and up-to-date information about invasive plants in New England. The goals of the project are to facilitate education and research leading to a greater understanding of the dynamics of plant invasions, and to support the early detection of new invasions, which will enable rapid management responses. The project includes a web-accessible atlas with images and descriptive information for the invasive and potentially invasive plants in New England. Collection databases constructed from herbarium specimens and current field records document the dates and locations of invasive plant occurrences, making it possible to generate maps that depict the distribution and spread of invasive plants across New England.

Steam and Electric Locomotives of the New Haven Railroad
Project Manager: Laura Katz Smith, Curator for Business, Railroad, Labor and Ethnic Heritage and Immigration Collections, Archives & Special Collections, Thomas J. Dodd Research Center, University of Connecticut Libraries
Project Summary: The 460 black-and-white photographs that comprise this digital collection are from the Fred Otto Makowsky Collection, held in Archives & Special Collections at the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center of the University of Connecticut Libraries. The photographs document steam and electric locomotives owned and operated by the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad from the 1870s to the mid-1900s.

Scanned Maps of Connecticut, 1676-1930
Project Manager: Sarah Mindel, Map & Geospatial Data Librarian, Map & Geographic Information Center (MAGIC), University of Connecticut Libraries. Please Note: This project was created and managed by Patrick McGlamery, the former Map Librarian.
Project Summary: MAGIC's historical map collection consists of 395 digitized maps of Connecticut, Long Island Sound, New England, the Northeast Atlantic region, and the United States, from the period 1676-1930.
